How Virginia Protects its Waterways

Wednesday, September 16, 2020
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

This webinar dives into Virginia’s legislative and rule-making process. It will answer questions such as:

  • How are laws developed and passed?
  • What does it mean that Virginia is a Dillon-rule state?
  • What is the difference between state code, regulation, and guidance?
  • Which decisions go before State Boards?
  • What does the Virginia constitution say about water quality?
  • How do these moving parts come together to help protect and restore our Chesapeake Bay?

We’ll use case studies to illustrate the ins and outs of the legislative and rule-making process. Whether you’re a policy wonk or just wading in, you’ll learn how to navigate Virginia’s process and be a more effective advocate for clean water.

Our speaker, Jay Ford, is currently CBF's Virginia Policy and Grassroots Advisor, based in Accomack County. Prior to joining CBF, he served as the Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper as a tireless advocate for clean water in the region. He was Senator Ralph Northam’s legislative aide for six years and brings his wealth of experience inside the General Assembly.
