Shell Shaking

Friday, July 30, 2021
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
CBF's Maryland Oyster Restoration Center
4800 Atwell Road
Shady Side, MD 20764

Registration closes July 29 at noon.

Come help the CBF Oyster Restoration crew prepare oyster shells for the upcoming restoration season!

"Shell shaking" involves cleaning oyster shells by shaking off the dirt and debris so “spat” (juvenile oysters) can successfully grow on them. This is critical in our oyster restoration efforts, as without cleaning the oyster shells, we could potentially lose millions of healthy larvae as they attach to debris, rather than the shell, and are later washed out into the silt.

This event is a bit of a workout, but a fun hands-on experience. With lifting involved, it is not recommended for individuals with a bad back or other health concerns.

All participants must bring their own gloves and closed-toe shoes. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

All event participants must register individually. If you are planning to attend as a group (i.e., company volunteer day), please contact Patrick Beall at or 443-482-2065 to make accommodations. Due to COVID-19 safe distancing practices, we are extremely limited in event capacity, so please only register if you plan on attending.

COVID-19 Precautions:

  • For the health and safety of our volunteers, CBF requires that all volunteers complete CBF’s Health and COVID Screening Form prior to engaging in any volunteer efforts. This includes conducting a personal COVID health screening prior to the start of the event.
  • Fully vaccinated people do not need to wear a mask while attending a CBF event. In line with CDC guidelines, we recommend that unvaccinated people continue to wear a mask and practice physical distancing whenever possible.
  • We will not be providing water, so please be sure to bring enough to last you through the event.

Registration closes July 29 at noon.
